Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

  • How do I know if my pet might need surgery?

Certain health issues are best treated with surgery. Injuries, trauma, chronic problems like severe arthritis, and recurring infections sometimes need surgical intervention when other treatments haven't helped. Surgery can also be preventative, such as gastropexy to prevent bloat or removing small tumors. In emergencies like twisted stomachs or difficult births, prompt surgery can be life-saving.

  • Do I need a referral from my vet or can I book directly?

You’re welcome to reach out to us directly for a surgical consultation. Many pet owners come to us on their own, and we’ll communicate with your regular veterinarian as needed. If you have a referring vet, we often coordinate follow-up care with them – sharing reports, X-rays, and updates – so you won’t have to travel back and forth unnecessarily. The goal is to work as a team with your family vet to give your pet the best care. Whether you come via referral or not, we’ll make sure your vet stays informed about your pet’s surgical plan and progress.

  • What happens during a surgical consultation?

During a consultation, our surgeon will examine your pet and discuss their medical history and symptoms. We may perform diagnostics like X-rays or an ultrasound to pinpoint the issue. Once we have a clear picture, we’ll talk through whether surgery is the right option and why. You’ll learn what the surgery would involve, the expected benefits, and any risks. We encourage you to ask any questions – the consultation is the time to address all your concerns so you feel confident about the next steps. If you decide to proceed, we’ll help you plan a surgery date that suits your schedule and your pet’s needs.

Surgery Day

  • What is the process on surgery day?

On surgery day, you’ll drop off your pet at the scheduled time. Our team will confirm the plan, have you sign consent forms, and reassure you before we take your pet in. We start with a final pre-surgery check, then gently prep your pet with a mild sedative, IV line, and site cleaning.

The procedure is done in our modern theatre by an experienced surgeon, with advanced monitoring and dedicated nursing support throughout.

Pain is carefully managed with anaesthesia and local blocks. After surgery, your pet recovers in a warm, quiet area under close watch, with ongoing comfort care. We’ll keep you updated and let you know when they’re ready to head home or if an overnight stay is needed.

  • Can I get updates on my pet's surgery progress?

Yes, absolutely. We can give you a call or text once the surgery is underway, especially for longer procedures. You’re also welcome to call us anytime for an update.

After surgery, we’ll contact you to share how it went, how your pet is doing, and confirm pick-up or check-in details. If anything unexpected happens, the surgeon will call you straight away. Just make sure we have your best contact number on the day.

  • Will my pet need to stay overnight?

It depends on the procedure. Many routine surgeries, like desexing or small lump removals, allow for same-day discharge. More complex cases—such as orthopaedic or emergency surgeries—may require an overnight stay for monitoring, pain management, and care.

We’ll let you know ahead of time if that’s likely, and rest assured, your pet will be well looked after throughout.

  • Will my pet be in pain after surgery?

We take pain management seriously. Your pet will receive long-acting pain relief during surgery, and we tailor post-op care with medications to keep them comfortable. Some sleepiness is normal, but they shouldn’t be crying or overly restless. You’ll go home with instructions and pain meds, and if you’re ever concerned, we’re just a call away.

  • Can I visit my pet in the hospital?

In most cases, yes—and visits can help your pet feel better. We’ll work with you to find a good time, and you may be asked to sanitise or wear a gown. Some pets may be a bit sleepy, but your presence is still comforting. For short stays, visits may not be necessary, and we’ll guide you on what’s best.

Fees & Payment

  • How much will surgery cost?

Costs depend on the type and complexity of the procedure. We’ll give you a detailed estimate upfront, covering surgery, meds, tests, and hospital care. We aim to keep our pricing fair while providing high-quality care.

If you have insurance, we can help with claims. If not, we’ll discuss options to make things manageable.

  • Will pet insurance cover the surgery?

Often yes, depending on your policy.

Most plans cover major procedures like lump removals or ligament repairs, though some have waiting periods or exclude pre-existing conditions. We’ll provide everything you need for your claim and can sometimes bill insurers directly.

If your pet isn’t insured, now might be a good time to consider it.

  • What if I can't afford surgery without insurance?

We’ll do everything we can to help. While we don’t offer in-house payment plans, you may be eligible for VetPay, a service that offers flexible payment options for veterinary care.

You can find more information or apply directly at vetpay.com.au.

We’re upfront about costs and will always focus on finding the best way to care for your pet.
